Wilbert Winston Mason, of Shreveport, passed away on February 27, 2023. He was born on August 6, 1933, to Elijah and Annie Mason. Wilbert was predeceased by his parents; all his siblings and their spouses: Sr. Helen Marie Mason, MSC, Annie Marie Howard (John), Patrick Mason (Maurine), Ruth Crenshaw (Miron), and Martha Lee Mason; his niece, Alison Watson; and great-niece, Claire Barker. He is survived by 11 nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews.
Wilbert graduated from Northwestern University, LSU, and Centenary College, earning degrees in Music Education. He taught for 30 years in public schools in Lafayette and Caddo Parish, and parochial schools. A member of the U.S. Army, Wilbert retired as a Lt. Col. in the Army Reserves. He traveled the world with the Army and the Shreveport Chamber Singers, as well as touring in Europe on his own. In later years, he became a proud member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, serving as Post Commander at one time. A member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Wilbert sang for many years in the choir. He was a man of numerous interests and talents, most notably an accomplished pianist, though he played many instruments.
Services will be held on Saturday, March 4, at Forest Park Funeral Home, 1201 Louisiana Ave. Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until 10 AM, immediately followed by a funeral service at 10 AM. Burial will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery, 3700 St. Vincent Ave.
