Sue Devall King Babineaux passed away Wednesday, March 7, surrounded by her loving family. Born April 11, 1955 and named for her grandmother, Sue Devall Chamberlin, she was youngest of the four children of Luise Haessler King and Benjamin Chamberlin King. She was raised in Shreveport and attended South Highlands Elementary, Broadmoor Junior High and Byrd High School where she was a member of the pep squad and a state champion tennis player. After graduation she headed to Oklahoma State University to study art history, and then transferred to LSU to pursue a degree in geology. While there she met her future husband, Clarence. She returned to Shreveport to continue her education, receiving an MBA, after which she began a successful 25-year career as a stock broker. At various intervals during her career, she taught Marketing at LSUS. Long summer road trips piloted by her mother fostered a lifelong love of travel. In retirement, Sue embraced the opportunity to continue her lifelong passion for travel with her family and friends. Favorite destinations included Hawaii (especially the volcanoes), rafting the Grand Canyon, Iceland, Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Turkey. Her zeal for sports included trips to the US Open (tennis), center court at Wimbledon and NASCAR races. In between trips, she honed her skills at contract bridge and spent many enjoyable days at the Shreveport Bridge House. Sue and Clarence were charter members of the mighty Krewe of Centaur, where she served in various capacities including Queen Centaur XII. Additional civic endeavors included the Junior League and The Twentieth Century Club. Even after her cancer diagnosis, she continued to travel between surgeries and treatments, particularly to New Orleans for its festivals, fabulous food, to cheer on her beloved Saints, and especially to spend time with her son, daughter-in-law and twin grandsons. Her indefatigable spirit during her nearly 6-year battle earned her the nickname Fierce Sue by the Bruddas, her special lifelong friends. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 35 years, Clarence; son Paul and his wife Molly and the sweetest grandsons ever, Shreve and Maxwell; her mother Luise Haessler King; siblings Katherine King, Ben King, Jr and wife Carol, and Margaret King and husband Pat Kitchen; nephews Robert King and Carl King; nieces Virginia Sayer and Keri Kitchen, aka Munchkin; a special cousin, Mary Christopher; the Bruddas - Courtney ‘Coco' Hudson, Sally Sartor, Carol Hetherwick Sutton, Janey Robertson Layssard and Donna Middlebrooks, along with her "second mother" Dorothy Montgomery. Waiting for her in Heaven is her dear father, Benjamin Chamberlin King. A memorial service will be conducted April 6, 2018 at 4pm at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, where Sue was a lifelong member, by The Very Reverend Alston B. Johnson. In accordance with her wishes, and because she always sought all the joy life had to offer, the family will host a reception to celebrate her life immediately following the memorial service, details of which will be announced at the service. Guests who are so inclined are encouraged to share a special memory of Sue at the reception. Sue's family wishes to acknowledge the very special care she received from Dr. Kevin Marler, Dr. Destin Black, Dr. Oliver Sartor, Dr. Scott Boniol, Dr. John Noles and the very caring staff of Grace Home. In lieu of flowers, friends and family wishing to honor Sue are asked to do so with a donation to St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, Providence House or the American Cancer Society.
