Robert "Bob" Wesley Hammond III, 54, former Louisiana Dept. of Transportation & Development Mechanic Supervisor, died on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in Shreveport, LA, after battling with cancer.
Bob was born on May 14, 1968, in Biloxi, MS, to Robert Wesley Hammond II and Pauline Patricia Prus. He grew up in San Antonio, TX and attended Southwest High School there. In February of 1989, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served active duty until retirement on March 1, 2011, as a Technical Sergeant. His primary duty stations were McGuire AFB, NJ; Incirlik AB, Turkey; and Barksdale AFB, LA. He bravely deployed numerous times throughout his military career. Bob went to work for the Louisiana DOTD in April 2012 and was always calculating how many years, months, weeks, and days were left until his second retirement. Bob’s passions were music, cars, and anything related to cars. He loved drag racing and was often researching ways to get that extra horsepower and speed. He always claimed not to be a people-person, but he talked to everyone – and if the topics involved cars, wheels, horsepower, or music, he could talk for hours. Bob met many people and developed several friendships over his lifetime. Their hearts are broken, but Bob’s memory will forever live on.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Wesley Hammond II and Pauline Patricia Prus, and special pet, Harley.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah “Debbie” Lynn Hammond; children, Robert “Robby” Wesley Hammond IV and Grace Margaret Hammond; daughter-in-law, Angelica “Angie” Hammond; siblings, Diane Dillard, David Dillard, and Robin Hammond; niece, Andrea Dillard; and pets, Stella and Boudreaux.
A celebration of Bob’s life and legacy will be held on Wednesday, October 19, from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM, at Forest Park Funeral Home, 1201 Louisiana Ave.
