Patricia “Pat” Cummings Madden, age 99, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Pat was born on August 11, 1925, in Haynesville, Louisiana. She attended A.C. Steere, Byrd High, and Centenary College, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. In her early years, she worked as a church secretary at Broadmoor Baptist Church, where she had been a member since the age of 12, being baptized in the church’s old wooden tabernacle.
Pat married her high school sweetheart, Jack Madden, in 1944, and together they raised a family steeped in faith and devotion. After marrying Jack, Pat dedicated her time to raising her children and serving in church activities. She was a tireless servant of the Lord, holding numerous roles at Broadmoor Baptist Church, including Baptist Women's President, Director of W.M.U., Preschool and Adult Sunday School Teacher, and serving on various church committees. Her faith and devotion to God were the cornerstones of her life.
Pat was also a member of the Shreveport Junior League and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Throughout her life, she was involved in her community and took great joy in giving back to others. Jack’s work took the family to Monroe, LA, and later to Asheville, NC, where they lived for 12 years.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, L. J. “Jack” Madden Jr.; her daughter, Jackelin Carol; her parents, Gladys and Carson Cummings; her brothers, Conrad and George Cummings; and her son-in-law, Smiley Funderburk.
Pat is survived by her son, Conrad and wife Susan of Mandeville, LA; her daughters, Brenda Funderburk of Oak Ridge, NC; Debra and husband Steve Megison of Dallas, TX; and Karen and husband Eddie Masencup of Troutman, NC. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Clay and wife Emily Madden, Lauren and husband Corey Parenton, Logan and wife Erica Madden, Lindsay and husband Mike Towers, Ryan Funderburk, Rachel and husband Tim Soeken, Stephen and wife Jessica Megison, Daniel and wife Caroline Megison, Catherine and husband Daniel Wagner, Gray and wife Kristin Masencup, and Matt and wife Morgan Masencup.
Pat also leaves behind 28 great-grandchildren, who brought her immense joy: Charlotte, Louise, and Bo Madden; Jackson and James Parenton; Chloe, Eleanor, Liam, and Austin Madden; Timothy, Stephen, Carey, Joseph, and Samantha Soeken; Barret and Beckett Megison; Ella Grace, Luke, and Noah Megison; Maisie and Stevie Wagner; Brooke, Edward, and Madison Masencup; and Wyatt, Sadie, and Carson Masencup and Noah Towers. She is also survived by her sisters-inlaw, Beverly Cummings Seely and Louise Madden Peevy, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pat was a devoted prayer warrior, lifting each member of her family by name in prayer daily. Her unwavering faith in God and deep love for her family were evident to all who knew her. Pat’s favorite Bible verse, II Corinthians 5:7, “For we walk by faith, not by sight,” was a guiding principle in her life. Today, we celebrate her life, knowing that her faith has now become her sight, as she is in the presence of her Savior.
Pallbearers will be: Clay Madden, Logan Madden, Ryan Funderburk , Stephen Megison, Daniel Megison, Tim Soeken, Dan Wagner, Corey Parenton, Mike Towers, Gray Masencup, and Matt Masencup.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the wonderful staff at Sunrise On Hillcrest in Dallas, Texas for the loving care they provided.
A private family service will be held in Pat’s honor at Forest Park Cemetery on April 25th, in Shreveport, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home & Family Ministries in Monroe, Louisiana (www.lbch.org).
May she rest in peace, knowing that her legacy of faith, love, and family will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
