Martha Mason

Martha Lee Mason, 91, of Shreveport died Friday, Dec. 29, in Bossier City. She was born Jan. 12, 1926, in Shreveport, to Elijah A. and Annie Monk Mason. Martha was a retired teacher, spending most of her career at North Caddo High School where she taught girls' P.E. and sponsored the pep squad. Her best and most memorable years were spent there with "her girls" who were like her children. After retiring from teaching, she went on to work another 15 years as a sales associate at J.C. Penney. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Patrick N. Mason; sisters, Annie Marie Howard, Ruth Alise (Peggy) Crenshaw, and Josephine (Sr. Helen Marie) Mason; two nieces, Claire Howard Barker and Alison Crenshaw Watson. She is survived by her brother, Wilbert W. Mason, of Shreveport; a sister-in-law, Maurine Mason, of Shreveport; 10 nieces and nephews, and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. Although she had no children of her own, Aunt Lee was everybody's "other mother." She played games with her nieces and nephews, never forgot birthdays, and always fed the neighborhood cats that came around her home. Lee loved crossword puzzles and was a history buff with an amazing memory for all sorts of trivia. She loved her faith and her family, living in the same home her entire life, where she took care of her parents until they passed. Our sincere thanks go to her longtime doctors, Dr. Irby and Dr. Gooszen and their staffs. We would also like to thank the therapists at Brewer's and the staff of Pierremont Nursing Center where she had resided for several months. Our gratitude goes out to Dr. Delmundo and staff for their compassionate care. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at Forest Park Funeral Home, 1201 Louisiana Ave. in Shreveport. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with services at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Forest Park East. Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities or the donor's choice.
