Margaret (Peggy) Slay Murphy peacefully passed away on September 21, 2024. Peggy was a devoted wife to Tommy, a loving mother to her children, a caring Gram and My to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a loyal friend to many.
Peggy was born in New Orleans to Arthur Clyde and Juett Jones Slay on November 2, 1924. She moved to Shreveport as a very young child and spent most of her life here. She graduated from CE Byrd High School. During World War II, she volunteered at Barksdale AFB as an entertainer with the USO. After the war, Peggy met and married ET (Tommy) Murphy in 1946.
She was a dedicated member of Broadmoor Presbyterian Church for 70 years. She served many terms as an Elder, volunteered in the church office, belonged to a Sunday School Class and was a member of Presbyterian Women’s Circle 1. In addition, at Fellowship Luncheons she was known for her attractive tablescapes and floral decorations and, perhaps most famously, for her chocolate pies.
She was a long time volunteer for Community Renewal, receiving in 2009 the Bridge Award for Outstanding Commitment to the Shreveport Community.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Tommy and her brother, James Robert Slay. She is survived by her children: Lynda Juneau (Lynn), Cathy Oliver and Michael Murphy (Diane), grandchildren: Leanne Juneau, Robert Juneau (Ashleigh), Jonathan Murphy (Madison), Kristin Murphy, Daniel Oliver (Lisa) and greatgrandchildren: Amelia Juneau, Kinslee Nichols, Greylynn Oliver, Ashtyn Oliver, Koewyn Oliver, Zaiidyn Oliver, and Bensyn Oliver and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will take place Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Forest Park Cemetery, 3700 St. Vincent Ave. Shreveport, LA 71103. Reverend Jim Freeman will officiate. All are welcome.
