John Whitfield Free

Services celebrating the life of John Whitfield (Whit) Free will be held Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Shreveport Baptist Temple on 288 Flournoy Lucas Rd., Shreveport, LA. Services conducted by Dr. Howard Hall. Visitation beginning at 10:00 AM will precede the service, burial immediately following at Forest Park West Cemetery, 4000 Meriwether Road, Shreveport, LA 71109.

John Whitfield (Whit) Free, 81, was born August 15, 1942, in Newport, AR to Floyd Jackson Free and Lula Christean Free and passed away on September 23, 2023 in Shreveport, LA. He worked as a construction engineer and superintendent for 43 years. He was a member of Shreveport Baptist Temple, Shreveport, LA.

Whit is survived by his wife of 62 years, Loretta Dean Free of Bethany, LA; son, Danny Free (and Janeece) of Bethany, LA; four grandchildren, Danielle Free, Laura Primos (and Chad), Shelby Free, and John David Free; 10 great-grandchildren, brothers Donald Free (and Gayle), George Free (and Shirley), and Randy Free (and Ida), numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.

His family was the light of his life. He enjoyed spending time with the family, working in his garden, working on his antique tractors, fishing and going to family reunions in Hot Springs, AR. He is preceded in death by his parents Floyd Free, Christean Free, brother James Free and sister Lula Floyd. Pallbearers are nephews and grandsons.
