Janice Cowden Oakes, 84, passed away peacefully at Grace Home in Shreveport, LA on August 12, 2022. Janice was born on January 23, 1938, in Sparta, TN, to Herman and Nina Cowden. She lived her life in Sparta, TN; Nashville, TN; Hattiesburg, MS; Atlanta, GA; and Shreveport, LA. She worshipped as a member of Grace Community Church, enjoyed spending time reading books, and she volunteered at the Tennessee School for the Blind.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Oakes; parents, Herman and Nina Cowden; and sister, Norma Sue Cowden.
She is survived by her children, Mike Oakes and Bruce Oakes; grandchildren, Jennifer (Evan) Bayton, Amanda (Cody) Crowder, and Dalton (Meagan) Oakes; and great-grandchildren, Brady and Brooks Bayton, Chloe Crowder, and Olivia Oakes.
Public visitation will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2022, from 10:30 AM until 12:00 PM, at Grace Community Church, 9400 Ellerbe Rd, Shreveport, LA 71106. Funeral services will begin immediately afterward followed by burial at Forest Park West Cemetery, 4000 Meriwether Rd, Shreveport, LA 71109.
