Jack Hugh Barr, 66, of Shreveport passed away on Sunday afternoon, September 13, 2015, after a lengthy illness. Family visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 16 from 6-9 pm at Forest Park Funeral Home and funeral services will be held at 11 am on Thursday, September 17 at Barksdale Baptist Church in Bossier City, 1714 Jimmie Davis Highway, with Brother Calvin Hubbard officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Park West. Jack was born on October 11, 1948 in Alexandria, Louisiana, and grew up in Winn Parish. He graduated from Atlanta High School in 1966 and then attended Northwestern State University where he was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity and earned a BA in 1973. He also earned his nursing degrees from NSU, receiving his ADN in 1984 and his BSN in 1993. He married Gaylen Allison Barr on August 11, 1972 and raised three children here in Shreveport. He was an RN at the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center for 28 years, and he considered it a huge privilege to take care of veterans for his entire nursing career. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, James W. Barr, Sr., and Bill Barr. He is survived by his wife, Gaylen, of Shreveport ; brother, Jim and wife Neva, of Winnfield; sister in law, Cheryl Allison of Shreveport; and brothers in law, Rusty Allison of Shreveport, and Craig Allison and wife Mary Ann of Tulsa, OK; two daughters, Alexis Appleton and husband Eric, of Shreveport, LA; Heather Curtis and husband Brent, of Ramstein Air Base, Germany, and a son, Adam Barr and wife JaNetta, of Oklahoma City, OK; nine grandchildren, Carter, Ann-Elise, Matthew, Joshua, Mary Claire, and Andrew Appleton, Jack and Kennedy Curtis, and James Wesley Barr; and many more cherished family members and friends. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Johnston, Gerry Johnston, John David White, Roger Smith, Johnny Hammonds, and Charles Miller. Honorary pallbearers include Doug White, Ken Bates, and Austin Stoker. The family would like to give a special thanks to the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at Baylor Health in Dallas, TX and Drs. Agura and Escobar, as well as Kim Guillot with Willis-Knighton Home Health and Lucie Grove with Willis-Knighton Hospice.
