Helen Thomas

Mrs. Helen Gulley Thomas, 93, passed away on Monday, February 28 in Shreveport, LA after a brief illness. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 26, at 2:00 pm at Forest Park Funeral Home, 1201 Louisiana Ave in Shreveport. Helen was born in Panola County, TX on August 12, 1928. Her mother died when Helen was very young, so her paternal and maternal aunts were very involved with her upbringing. After graduating from Carthage High School, she moved to Shreveport and worked for a law firm there. She fell in love with a young Air Force officer, and they married on April 11, 1953. During her husband's career as an Air Force officer, she supported him by being active in the Officers Wives Clubs at the various bases where they were stationed. When he served as the Defense Attach to Pakistan, she hosted numerous diplomatic social events at their residence in Islamabad. After her husbands retirement from the Air Force, they returned to Shreveport, where they enjoyed many years with their family and friends. Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, John Powers Thomas, and her parents, James Henry Gulley and Pearl Davidson Gulley, of Panola County, Texas. She is survived by her daughter, Lynne, and husband, Michael, of Riverside, CA; son, John Jr. and wife, Peggy, of Niceville, FL; grandchildren, Michael, Christine, Leah, and Sara; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Hollie; sister-in-law, Genevieve Thomas of San Antonio, TX; and nephew, Patrick Andrew, and niece, Caroline, of Frisco, TX. The family requests that memorials be made to St. Jude's or the charity of their choice. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Helen's special friends: Marjan Trutschl, Urska Cvek, and the extended Cain family, as well as the staff of Montclair Park, and the sitters of Wings of Love who took such good care of her in her final years.
