Gladys M. Layton

June 8, 1927 — March 3, 2016

Our beloved Mom, Mamaw and Great Grandma, Gladys Matthews Layton, 88, passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2016, in Shreveport, La. She was born in Welch, La., in 1927, to parents Adam and Minnie Matthews. At age 15, after her family had moved to Lake Charles, she met the love of her life, the late Milton Layton. She was taking a bus to meet her sister at a caf and he was the driver. On the day she met him, he told her he was going to marry her. She laughed and told him he was crazy. They married several months later and were married for 46 years at the time of his death. Together they moved to Shreveport and had six children, including Vernon and Gayle Layton of Houston, Texas; Barbara and Robert Goheen of Lakeland, Fla.; Shirley and Donnie Smith of Vivian, La.; Betty and the late Bill Lamb of Shreveport; Donna and Robbie Aubrey of Benton, La.; and Roger and Linda Layton of Blanchard. Her children gifted her with 17 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Momma lived and loved for all her family! She also left behind her best friend of many years, Norma Prymek, who helped her in so many ways. The last five years of Mom's life she was a resident of Springlake Nursing Home. There she made many, many friends, among them one of her best, Ms. Jo. We'd like to thank Mr. Claude Pasquier for showing such dedication and special care for our mother during her stay there. We'd also like to thank Liz, Ms. Gladys and Fran for their kindness. During her final years, Mother endured a lot of pain. We know that now she's free of pain and is in Heaven. Mama finally got her angel wings! Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 7, at Forest Park Funeral Home. Service is at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Forest Park West Cemetery. ""I Made It Home"" I just wanted to let you all know that I made it home. The journey wasn't an easy one, but it didn't take too long. Everything is so pretty here, so white, so fresh and new. I wish that you all could close your eyes and that you could see it too. Please try not to be sad for me. Try to understand God is taking care of me... I'm in the shelter of His hands. Here there is no sadness, no sorrow, and no pain. Here there is no crying and I'll never hurt again. Here it is so peaceful when all the angels sing. I really have to go for now... I've just got to try my wings. SERVICES Visitation Monday, March 07, 2016 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Forest Park Funeral Home 1201 Louisiana Ave. Shreveport, Louisiana 71101
