Shreveport, LA — Mrs. Dorothy “Kim” Long entered heavenly rest on July 8, 2025. Her funeral service will begin at noon in the chapel at Forest Park Funeral Home on July 14, 2025, with Pastor Thomas Patton of Cypress Baptist officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Park Cemetery.
Kim was born in Baton Rouge, LA, to Ward and Juanita Sheridan Peters on May 7, 1948. She was the eldest of four children—three daughters and one son: Kim, Jean, Robbie, and their younger brother, Leroy Ward Peters. The family soon moved to Shreveport and like many in her generation, she attended Shreve Island elementary and eventually graduated from Byrd High School in 1966. After high school, she enrolled at USL and then went on to earn an Associate Degree in Nursing from Northwestern State University.
For many years, Kim worked professionally as a Registered Nurse (RN) in both the operating room at Highland Hospital and on an open-heart team at Willis-Knighton. After a long RN career, she continued to share her caring nature by supporting nursing-home residents—bringing food, snacks, and lively conversation to brighten their days.
In the spring of 1982, Kim married the love of her life, Dr. Harvey Louis Long. She was an avid traveler who explored every corner of the United States and took many trips abroad. As a passionate gardener, she took immense pride in maintaining a landscaped yard full of beautiful flowers.
She is survived by her son, Christopher Scott Bourgeois, his wife, Mikael Ann Bourgeois, and her granddaughter, Rubie Mae Bourgeois, of Houston, TX; her brother, Leroy Ward Peters; her sister, Jean Peters Bourque, and Jean’s son, Patrick Bourque; Stephen and Tina Long of Little Rock, AR; and Lindsey and Jeff Free and their son, Jonathan Free, of Shreveport, LA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ward and Juanita Peters; her sister, Robbie Peters; and her loving husband, Dr. Harvey Louis Long.
Pallbearers will be Chris Bourgeois, Coby Desormeaux, Mike Guilbeaux, Stephen Long, and Leroy Peters. Honorary pallbearer is Max Ongaro.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Kim’s devoted caregiver, Julia Gilkey, who—with a true servant’s heart—stood by Kim for the last six years during her battle with Parkinson’s disease. Julia was a stalwart advocate, ensuring that Kim received the highest standard of care. The family would also like to acknowledge Ladoris Evans, another wonderful caregiver who supported both Kim and Harvey during the last phase of their lives.
