David Owen Jr.

David Roger Owen Jr. went to be with his Lord at the age of 90 at Christus Highland on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, after a brief illness. David was born in Scuba, Mississippi to David Roger Sr. and Sarah Evelyn Owen on March 8, 1931. David was the oldest of 9 siblings. He proudly served in the Army during the Korean conflict. After his service, he met the love of his life, Gladys Marie Nygaard. They married on July 3, 1954. He was a master welder at J.B. Beaird, later known as Beaird Industries, until he retired after 45 years. David, who proudly answered to Poppy, enjoyed working in his yard, gardening, spending time with his family, sitting on the back porch watching the birds, and dancing with his bride at the VFW and American Legion. He was a very devout Christian and truly loved the Lord. Poppy was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 67 years; his siblings, Barbara, Jane, Arnold, Joe, Mickey, and Sandra; and also his beloved son in law, Harry Paul McKinnon. David is survived by his son, Gary Owen and wife Cyndi; daughter, Calene Owen McKinnon; grandchildren, Shannon Hooker and husband Kevin, Kristen Chona and husband Julio; great granddaughter, Megan Long and husband Justin, and Nathan Paul Chona who is expected in May; siblings, Mamie and Ouida; and numerous nieces and nephews. Poppy will always be remembered by his many made up handshakes, singing to "Your momma done told me," always being fine as Mogen David Wine, and never leaving a conversation without telling you not to take any wooden nickels. Poppy was very passionate about loving and making sure his girls were okay. Pallbearers are Kenneth Hooker, Steve Mortimer, Randle Behrens, Julio Chona, Justin Long, and Kevin Hooker. Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at 4:00PM at Forest Park Funeral Home, 1201 Louisiana Ave. in Shreveport, LA. A celebration of life service will be graveside at Forest Park West Cemetery, 4000 Meriwether Road Shreveport, LA 71109 on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at 1:30PM. Bro. Ted Hardan will be officiating.
